Al Masmak Palace is a clay and mud-brick fort in the center of old Riyadh (near Deira Souq).

The Story (1902)

King Abdulaziz and his men (40 or 63 soldiers) sneaked back into Riyadh and captured this fort in a dawn raid, marking the start of the unification of Saudi Arabia.

What to See?

  1. The Door: Look for the broken tip of a spear embedded in the main wooden gate. It was thrown by one of the defenders at King Abdulaziz's cousin during the battle.
  2. The Museum: Inside, there are maps, photos, and weapons from that era.
  3. Diwan: The majlis area.

Tips

  • Entry: Free.
  • Nearby: Visit the Deira Souq next door to buy Bisht (traditional cloaks) and carpets.
