Saudi Arabia's public decency code requires modest dress in all public spaces. While dress standards have relaxed significantly (especially for international tourists), showing respect for the local culture ensures a smooth and pleasant visit.
Clothing Guidelines for Women
International female tourists are **not required by law to wear the abaya** (the loose black cloak) or headscarves in Taif. However, modest attire is still mandatory.
✅ Recommended:
- • Loose, long pants or maxi skirts
- • Long-sleeve shirts or tunics
- • Cardigans or light jackets (for mountain air)
- • Light cotton fabrics for daytime walks
❌ Avoid in Public:
- • Shorts or skirts above the knee
- • Sleeveless tops or low-cut shirts
- • Tight-fitting athletic wear (unless hiking)
- • Transparent fabrics
Clothing Guidelines for Men
Men are also expected to dress modestly in public areas of Taif.
✅ Recommended:
- • Long trousers, chinos, or jeans
- • Collared shirts, t-shirts, or sweaters
- • Jackets or windbreakers for high altitudes
❌ Avoid in Public:
- • Shorts above the knee (especially in malls or heritage sites)
- • Sleeveless tank tops
- • Clothing with offensive prints or slogans
Dressing for Mountain Hikes & Altitudes
If you are heading up to Al Shafa or Al Hada, temperature changes can be extreme.
- • **Layering:** Carry a fleece jacket or windbreaker. At 2,200m, Al Shafa can be 10–15°C cooler than the valley.
- • **Footwear:** Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes or sneakers. The rocky granite terrain is uneven.
- • **Sun Protection:** The high altitude increases UV exposure. Wear sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.
