Tipping Culture in Saudi Arabia: Is it Rude?

Saudi Arabia does not have an aggressive tipping culture like the USA, but it is changing.

The Rules

  • Restaurants: Tipping is NOT mandatory.
    • However, leaving 10-15% for exceptional service is appreciated.
    • Check the bill: Some high-end places add a "Service Charge".
  • Taxis/Uber: Rounding up (e.g., let them keep the change from 20 for an 18 SAR ride) is common.
  • Bellboys/Cleaners: It is Sunnah (Charity) to help low-income workers. Giving 5-10 SAR to a cleaner or porter is seen as a kind act of Sadaqah/gift rather than a "tip".

Terminology

  • "Bakhshish" (Tip) - though usually just handing the money with a "Shukran" is enough.
