Masjid Al-Qiblatayn (Mosque of the Two Qiblas) marks a pivotal moment in Islamic history: the change of the direction of prayer.
The History (2 AH)
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions were praying Dhuhr (or Asr) prayer facing Bait al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).
- The Revelation: In the middle of the prayer, the verse was revealed: "Turn then Your face in the direction of the sacred Mosque (Kaaba)" (Quran 2:144).
- The Action: The Prophet (PBUH) turned 180 degrees towards Makkah without breaking prayer, and the congregation followed him.
- Result: For one prayer, they faced two Qiblas.
Architecture
- Historically, the mosque had two Mihrabs (prayer niches) to mark both directions.
- Modern Day: During recent renovations, the niche facing Jerusalem was removed to avoid confusion for worshipers. Only the Mihrab facing Makkah remains, though the history is palpable.
