Jannat al-Baqi is the main cemetery of Madinah, located southeast of Masjid Al-Nabawi. It holds the bodies of over 10,000 Sahaba (Companions).
Notable Graves
Graves are unmarked (dirt mounds) per Sunnah, but guides often indicate general areas.
- Uthman ibn Affan (RA): The 3rd Caliph. Located far back in the middle.
- The Daughters of the Prophet (PBUH): Ruqayyah, Zaynab, Umm Kulthum, and Fatimah (RA).
- The Wives of the Prophet (PBUH): Aisha (RA), Hafsa (RA), and others (except Khadija, who is in Makkah).
- Imam Malik: The great jurist of Madinah.
- Ibrahim: The infant son of the Prophet (PBUH).
Visiting Syllabus
- Opening Times (Men Only): Usually opens briefly after Fajr and Asr prayers.
- Entrance: Main gate faces the Masjid Nabawi courtyard.
- Etiquette: Walk barefoot (optional but respectful on dirt). Do not wail. Recite Salam.
For Women
Women are not permitted to enter the graveyard enclosure.
- Where to view: There are designated viewing spots on the raised platform outside the fence where women can look in and recite Salam from a distance.
The Significance
The Prophet (PBUH) used to visit Baqi frequently at night to pray for forgiveness for its inhabitants. It is a place of immense mercy.
