Sa'i commemorates the struggle of Hajar (AS) running between the hills of Safa and Marwa searching for water for her son Ismail (AS).
The Basics
- Total Rounds: 7 One-way trips.
- Start: Safa.
- End: Marwa.
- Safa to Marwa = 1 Round.
- Marwa to Safa = 2 Rounds.
- You finish at Marwa (7th round).
- Total Distance: Approx 3.15 km.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Climb Safa: Move towards Safa. It is no longer a high hill but a paved slope. Face the Kaaba (if visible) and recite the Dua: "Innas-safa wal-marwata min sha'a'irillah..."
- Make Dua: Raise hands and pray for yourself.
- Walk towards Marwa.
- The Green Lights: There is a section marked by green fluorescent lights.
- Men: Should run/jog briskly between these lights (simulating Hajar's run in the valley).
- Women: Walk normally.
- Reaching Marwa: This completes round 1. Face Kaaba, make Dua.
- Return to Safa: This is round 2.
- Repeat until 7 rounds are done.
Rules
- Wudu: Highly recommended but not mandatory for Sa'i (unlike Tawaf). Women in menstruation CAN perform Sa'i (but not Tawaf).
- Continuity: Try not to take long breaks, though resting for a few minutes is allowed.
