Saudi Shawarma is different from Turkish or European versions. It's smaller, toasted, and drowning in garlic sauce.
The Styles
- The Classic (Sarookh): Chicken, Garlic Sauce (Toum), Pickles, Fries. Wrapped in Saj bread and toasted flat.
- The Plate (Arabi): Sliced shawarma bites served with fries and extra sauce.
Top Spots in Makkah
- Mama Noura: (Famous franchise). Excellent garlic sauce.
- Wogif: Known for spicy shawarma.
- Local "Bufiyas": Any small shop in Aziziyah selling fresh juice usually makes great, cheap (5 SAR) shawarma.
Tip
- Ask for "Shata" if you want hot sauce.
- Ask for "Jubna" (Cheese) for a gooey upgrade.
